This document describes a solution called SaFe Rack that helps bike riders in San Francisco find safe and proximate places to park their bikes. It does this by analyzing over 10,000 past bike theft incidents and the locations of over 1,800 bike racks in the city. It uses this data along with a user's destination and preferences to recommend specific bike racks that balance safety and proximity for parking. The recommendation is made by calculating local risk scores at different racks using kernel density estimation on crime data and selecting a rack with a weighted average of high safety and proximity.
