The document tells a story about an elder wise man who sees a young man throwing starfish back into the ocean. When the wise man asks why, the young man explains that the tide is going out and the starfish will die if not thrown back. The wise man says the young man cannot possibly make a difference given the vast number of starfish on the beach. But the young man replies that it made a difference for that one starfish. The wise man realizes the young man has a point - that each small act can make a difference. The document encourages readers to find ways to make a difference through their own small acts.

3. STARFISH (SEA STAR) Average lifespan in the wild: Up to 35 years Size: 4.7 to 9.4 in (12 to 24 cm) Weight: Up to 11 lbs (5 kg) Sea stars have no brains and no blood. Their nervous system is spread through their arms and their blood is actually filtered sea water. Their diet is Carnivore. Marine scientists have undertaken the task of replacing the beloved starfishs common name with SEA STAR, because the starfish is not a fish. Its an echinoderm, closely related to sea urchins and sand dollars . There are some 1,800 species of sea star living in all the worlds oceans, from tropical habitats to the cold seafloor. The five-arm varieties are the most common, hence their name, but species with 10, 20, and even 40 arms exist. They have bony, calcified skin, which protects them from most predators, and many wear striking colors that camouflage them or scare off potential attackers. Purely marine animals, there are no freshwater sea stars, and only a few live in brackish water.
4. STARFISH (SEA STAR) Most sea stars also have the remarkable ability to consume prey outside their bodies. Using tiny, suction-cupped tube feet, they pry open clams or oysters, and their sack-like cardiac stomach emerges from their mouth and oozes inside the shell. The stomach then envelops the prey to digest it, and finally withdraws back into the body. Male and female sea stars are not distinguishable from the outside; one needs to see the gonads or be lucky enough to catch them spawning. The gonads are located in each arm, and release gametes through gonoducts located on the central body between the arms. Sea stars are capable of both sexual and asexual reproduction. Individual sea stars are male or female. Fertilization takes place externally, both male and female releasing their gametes into the environment. Resulting fertilized embryos form part of the zooplankton.
5. Once upon a time there was an elder wise man who used to go by the ocean to do his journal writing.
6. He had a habit of taking walks on the beach before he began to work on his journal.
7. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw an image of human figure moving like a dancer.
8. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up.
9. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man but the young man wasn't dancing,
10. but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it back into the ocean.
11. As he got closer he called out, "Good morning! Young man What are you doing?"
12. The young man paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish in the ocean."
13. The elder in curiosity responded I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing the starfish in the ocean?
14. The young man replied The sun is up, and the tide is going out. If I don't throw the starfish in the ocean they will die.
15. The wise man responded But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach, and starfish all along it. You can't possibly make a difference!"
16. The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves
17. .. and said, "It made a difference for that one starfish."
18. The elder pondered a moment realizing the young mans point of view smiled and said Well done young man to make a difference in life.
