For the moment, events taking place in Haiti are mainly designed and organised by the DMO to fulfil three particular roles: improve the image of the destination, attract visitors and in some extent, create a kind of community cohesion. Many academic papers have been written about the Haitian economic situation. One of the latest is the paper written by Junia Barreau (2012) entitled: "FDI: The difficult situation of Haiti". However, any academic paper has been written about event programmes as a potential way to sustain cultural and sporting activities in Haiti. This article aims to contribute to the body of meta-literature in this area by answering the following question: How can event programmes in Haiti be imagineered to maximise outputs for the local community?
Our article unfolds in four steps. First, we diagnose the disadvantages SIDS usually faces. Second, we analyse some of the key societal features of Haiti. Third, the paper builds on academic critical literature on Event (particularly Imagineering Events) to highlights areas of good practice and areas that need to be improved by the DMO in Haiti. Forth, we discuss the impacts of those (Imagineering) Events on the performance of the destination. We also aim in this paper to find out if (Imagineering) Events in Haiti can be adequate replacement to attractions and be a boost for the tourism industry. So far, the government has failed to attract significant FDI due to the negative image of Haiti. At the moment entrepreneurship appears has a more probable option for the development of the country.
Many academic papers have been written about the Haitian economic situation. One of the latest is the paper written by Junia Barreau (2012) entitled: FDI: The difficult situation of Haiti. However, hardly any academic paper has been written about entrepreneurship in the tourism sector in Haiti as a potential source of economic development. This article aims to contribute to the body of meta-literature in this area.
Starting with a review of academic papers on entrepreneurship and then initiatives from the private and public sector to develop entrepreneurship in Haiti, this article adopts a progressive approach successively presenting the tourism industry as the way forward for Haiti and entrepreneurship as a vector.
Methodologically, this article builds on the academic critical literature on entrepreneurship and tourist. Then, based on case studies we are going to see how the development of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) can contribute to the development of entrepreneurship and to poverty reduction by providing poor people access to financial service. While Florida humanitarian and businessman Michael Capponi initially shared this focus, multiple visits to Haiti have convinced him that without long-term economic growth, the people of Haiti will not be able to improve their circumstances. Mr. Capponi has developed an innovative solution to the problem. He believes that rebranding and renewal could transform Haiti into an economically and politically stable country with a bright future.
- 3. Michael Capponi Michael Capponi, who earned his fortune through high end entertainment and real estate projects in Florida, sees a large, untapped potential in Haiti. He has begun his renewal efforts in the oceanfront town of Jacmel.
