Partition Is an area of a hard disk that can be
formatted and assigned a drive letter.
Spin
Refers to the process of a hard drive or
optical drive speed dishes or optical disc
inserted a stopped state to an operating
speed.
Platter
(or disk): Is the circular disk on which
magnetic data is stored in a hard disk
drive. The rigid nature of the platters in a
hard drive is what gives them their name
(as opposed to the flexible materials which
are used to make floppy disk).
Disk read/write heads are the small parts of a disk drive, that
move above the disk platter and transform
the platter's magnetic field into electrical
current (read the disk) or vice versa
transform electrical current into magnetic
field (write the disk).
Floppy disk also called a diskette, is a disk storage medium
composed of a disk of thin and flexible
magnetic storage medium, sealed in a
rectangular plastic carrier lined with fabric
that removes dust particles. Floppy disks are
read and written by a floppy disk drive.
Seek Time is the time it takes a device to find the first
thing you have to start reading.
Defragmenter is a process that reduces the amount of
fragmentation. It also attempts to create
larger regions of free space using compaction
to impede the return of fragmentation. Some
defragmentation utilities try to keep smaller
files within a single directory together, as they
are often accessed in sequence.}
Formatting is a set of computer, independent operations
each other, physical or logical, allowing
restore a hard drive, a partition of the same or
any other storage device data to its original
state, or optimal for reuse or rewritten with
new information.
Sector: is the section of the surface thereof
corresponding to the area enclosed between
two radial lines of a track
Backup or the process of backing up, refers to the
copying and archiving of computer data so it
may be used to restore the original after
a data loss event.
Data Transfer Rate is determined by a combination of mechanical
and electronic factors. Thanks to technological
advances in recent years, today's hard drives
can transfer data at a rate that is nearly 60,000
times faster than that of the first units of the
1950s.
Fragmentation Is a phenomenon that occurs with regular use
of storage devices, either main memory (RAM)
or secondary storage devices such as hard
drives or flash drives.
USB Flash Drive Is a data storage device that includes flash
memory with an integrated Universal Serial
Bus (USB) interface. USB flash drives are
typically removable and rewritable, and
physically much smaller than an optical disc.
CD/DVD Burner a device that can record data to a compact
disc using a laser to etch the data into
Hybrid drives are storage devices that combine NAND flash
solid-state drive (SSD) with hard disk drive
(HDD) technology, with the intent of adding
some of the speed of SSDs to the cost-effective
storage capacity of traditional HDDs.
The purpose of the SSD in a hybrid drive is to
act as a cache for the data stored on the HDD,
by keeping copies of the most frequently used
data on the SSD for improved overall
performance.
Non-volatile memory: is computer memory that can get back stored
information even when not powered.
