MISSION SMILE AND
MALNUTRITION
Mission Smile provides
comprehensive cleft care to? patients.
Nutrition is one of our major areas of
focus as many children with cleft
deformities are unable to get enough
nutrition as they cannot eat properly.
They often come to us severely under
weight and have to be put on a nutrition
plan in order to? bring their weight up to
optimum level.

NUTRITION
ISSUE IN INDIA
| Mission Smile
Malnutrition, also known as
Undernutrition, is a major health
concern in India. Undernutrition is
associated with high rates of
mortality and morbidity and is an
underlying factor in almost
one-third to half of all children under
five years who die each year of
preventable causes. The level of
child undernutrition is unacceptably
high in almost all states.

Cleft babies need more
attention because of their
inability to suckle
sufficient breast milk due
to their cleft deformity.
Supplemntary foods
gradually help babies to
gain weight along with
reducing malnutrition.

INTERVENTION
"ASSAM MIX"
At Mission Smile we have been using Assam Mix, a
baby cereal food developed by the Department of
Nutrition, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, for
children who need cleft surgery but are
undernourished and do not comply with the minimum
medical standards required for surgery. Over the last 5
years we have been supplying this ready-mix to these
malnourished children. We have noticed an amazing
improvement in their growth and nutritional status.
Assam Mix is extremely nutritious and easily digestible.
It is recommended for babies over 6-months of age.

INTERVENTION
""ASSAM BHIM"
Assam Bhim is an extremely nutritious, digestible
and is recommended for babies after 6 months
of age when breast milk alone can no longer
provide total cover of the infant’s growing
nutritional requirements. The Nutritious powder is
also suitable for pregnant women, adolescent
girls and people suffering from old age. Overall
anyone who is not able to get a proper diet
involving all the essential nutrients can consume
Assam Bhim as supplementary nutrition.
