A MIT researcher warns that the rate of autism diagnoses is increasing dramatically in the United States, with one in every two children expected to be diagnosed with autism by 2025 if the trends continue unabated. The researcher analyzed government data on autism rates and found that the number of autistic children has increased from 1 in 10,000 in 1981 to 1 in 68 currently, with boys being four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls. The causes of autism's dramatic rise are unclear but factors like environmental toxins, prescription drug use during pregnancy, and changes to autism diagnosis criteria may be contributing.
