Mongolia presentation
- 1. Mongolia's temperate grasslands. The Mongolian Steppes
- 2. The Mongolian steppes are temperate grasslands that cover parts of eastern Mongolia
- 3. Winters on the Mongolian steppes are cold, temperatures dropping to well below freezing.
- 4. Summer months are characterized by high temperature and little to no precipitation.
- 5. Mongolian flora is mostly tall grasses (such as feather grass) and small shrubs, with some wild flowers mixed in.
- 6. Mongolian wildlife are dominated by grazing herds.
- 7. The Last Wild Horse. Przewalski's Horse
- 8. Przewalski's horses are the ancestor to all modern horses, and are named after the Russian colonel who first described them for taxonomical records in 1881. In Mongolian they are known as 'Tahki', which means 'spirit'. They are considered the last true wild horse, having never been domesticated.
- 9. Until recently, the Tahki or Przewalski's horse was extinct in the wild, the last sighting in 1969. Nearly thirty years later, in 1992, sixteen horses were re-released into the wild of the Mongolian steppes.
- 10. Many semi-wild herds have been introduced to other areas such as the Askania Nova reserve in the Ukraine and Hortob叩gy plains in Hungary.
- 11. Due to the conservation efforts put in place by both foreign and local governments, it seems as though Przewalskis horse is back to stay.
