Proper maintenance is important during monsoon season to prevent home damage from heavy rains. Homeowners should check for leaks around windows and doors, ensure drains and pipes are clear of blockages, and inspect roof drains and vents for debris that could cause flooding. Common issues include water entering through cracks, blocked drains causing waterlogging, and leaves or dirt clogging roof drainage systems. Staying vigilant and clearing issues before monsoon arrives can help avoid costly repairs.

1. Monsoon Maintenance For Your Home
The south west monsoons are here and with it days on end of rain, moisture,
and water. We are in for four months of relentless rain which is bound to bring
with it, its share of troubles for homeowners. If proper preventive
maintenance measures are taken to protect your home, a lot of damage can be
avoided. Here are a few tips to follow
1) Ensure all windows are tightly shut and there are no leaks. Plug all leaks
with silicone sealant. Check all windows before leaving on a holiday.
2) Check all sliding doors and windows whether the sealant is intact. If the
sealant is found cracked or broken, call a maintenance expert and have
the sealant replaced fully.
3) Check drain and pipes for blockages, particularly if they are not in use.
Blocked drains lead to water logging and eventually seepage. Pour a
bucket of water into each drain and see if there is any delay in the exit.
If you find a drain blocked, then remove the strainer and grating and
proceed to clean the drain. Sometimes just pouring a bucket of water at
once, with force will dislodge the dirt or debris. If you can’t manage to
unblock the drain yourself, contact your builder or maintenance
department. Most builders of apartments and villas have a service team
on hand to take care of such services.
When the drain is cleared, check it by pouring a bucket of water again
into it and watch the progress.
Don’t forget to wash the strainer itself with soap and water, scrubbing
well to open all the holes in it.
4) In the event of a heavy downpour, it is advisable to remove the drain
covers to facilitate increased drainage flow. However most builders opt
for a larger grating on balconies and outdoor, especially builders in
Kerala.
5) It is advisable to inspect all drains, vents and pipes from the roof of your
home and all sunshades. Falling leaves and other debris tend to block
them causing water logging and seepage. This check should be carried
out midway through the monsoon also. It can prevent a lot of damage.
Most builders in monsoon prone area like Kerala and Mumbai generally take
care of these things, however as a home owner, you can’t leave things to
chance. Flat owners and apartment owners in Cochin must take special
precaution as the town is hit directly by the South West Monsoon and in for
heavy downpours with heavy winds.
