Basic
Characteristics of
Birds
Created by Marie @ The Homeschool Daily
There are some basic characteristics
of birds.
- Feathers
- Wings
- Lightweight Skeleton
- Beaks or Bills
- Lay eggs
Feathers are important for
flight, warmth, and protection.
They are made of keratin.
Wings can be used to assist in
flight, quick movements, and
swimming.
Most birds have lightweight
skeletons with hollow bones.
Beaks, or bills, are made up of
bone with a thin layer of keratin.
Beak shape identifies a birds diet.
Birds lay eggs. Chicks hatch from
eggs. The hard outer shell is made
up mostly of calcium.
All birds have similar
characteristics. Some are not as
commonly known as others. For
example, did you know that birds
have a four-chamber heart?
They are also
warm-blooded. This
means that their
body will stay at a
regulated
temperature
despite the
temperature
outside.
Did you know that they are also
vertebrates? A vertebrate is an
animal with a backbone!
Lastly, did you know that not all
birds can fly? True. The penguin
and emu can not fly.
