Motivation refers to moving or acting with purpose or aim. According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory, motivation comes from fulfilling basic needs like physical survival and safety before progressing to higher level needs for love, esteem, and self-actualization. While recognition and achievement can motivate high performers, addressing basic deficit needs is most important for motivation as a person without food, water, security or affiliation will not be motivated by other factors.
