In April of last year, I was working as a Receptionist at the Canadian Bar Association. It was a busy time of the year with Law Week and our Honourary Member Reception planned for the next few weeks. Our Communications Administrative Assistant, Julie, had been working on planning the Honourary Member Reception for some time now, but had fallen ill the day before and of the reception and could not come in. The Director of Stakeholder Relations, Joanne, came up to me and told me that since Julie was sick, she had called in a temp to cover reception and that I would finish off Julie’s work and attend the ceremony. I was very proud that she had asked me to work as this reception was to honour many lawyers and judges who had been practicing for over 50 years. One had been practicing for 72! Julie had not done as much work as had been required, so I had stayed late on both days in order to catch up with her work and prove to Joanne that I was more than just a Receptionist. The ceremony went off relatively flawlessly and I received many compliments, not only from my supervisor, Jineane, and Joanne, but from the President of the CBABC and many of the executive committee members. I also had brief chance to speak with Mr. Guy Joubert, President of the Canadian Bar Association, National. I was motivated by a need to prove myself, my co-workers, and the CBABC members that I was not only their Receptionist, but a hard-working and valuable asset to their organization.
