Our team is developing an audio-based satellite navigation mobile app for motorcyclists and cyclists. The app will provide turn-by-turn directions through clear, concise audio instructions to allow users to safely navigate while focusing on the road. Key features will include warning users of dangerous roads and conditions, a bicycle mode, and options to control instruction volume and frequency. The app aims to fill a gap for riders who find existing physical devices too expensive and screen-based apps too distracting.
2. The 5 W’s
Who?-Motorbikers and cyclists
What?-An entirely audio based satellite navigation system
When?-Before and during a journey by two wheeled
vehicle.
Where?-On the roads around the world
Why?-No other apps offer this and purpose built units are
not particularly good
3. Problem
Motorbikes are becoming a more and more
popular mode of transport. Yet while car
drivers have a wide range of satellite
navigation systems to choose from bikers
have a few handsets: these are expensive
and do not particularly positive reviews.
Motorbikers find the screen distracting and
the instructions leave a lot to be desired.
4. Question
How can we allow motorcyclists to be able to
use satellite navigation systems safely and
effectively?
5. Key Insight Statements
• More and more people are traveling using motorbikes.
• They have no easy entirely audio based Sat nav.
• A biker can type in the address and then follow clear
and concise instructions to arrive at his/her
destinations safely and effectively
6. Mini Elevator Statements
Our team, Ultra Platinum, is developing a mobile app
to help Motorcyclists and Cyclists be able to navigate
wherever they want to go, yet be able to do so safely
and efficiently. This can be achieved by an entirely audio
based sat-nav app, which also warns about dangerous
roads and conditions.
7. User Profiles
David
A motorcyclist
- Works for a motorbike shop
- Ridden motorcycles for years
- Often has to visit customers house
- Has often been lost
- Does not own a Bluetooth helmet
- Is not aware of any competitors
- Often uses a map
- But agrees this is awkward
Ben
- Is a keen cyclist
- Often goes cycling for fun
- Also cycles competitively
- Likes the idea
- Wants it to also find bridleways
8. Competitors
There are a number of physical devices made
for Motorcycles yet these cost over £300,
and may need further expenditure for a case
that could withstand the wind and rain when
ride a motorcycle. There is no dedicated
app for giving directions to motorcyclists
that we have been able to find.
10. Key Wireframes - 1
This is the opening screen
of the App when it is
opened on the Phone.
11. Key Wireframes - 2
This is the screen of the app
giving the written
instructions to the app.
12. Key Wireframes - 3
This is the screen of the map
version of the app. The
instructions will be said as
well as shown.
13. Key Wireframes - 4
This screen shows the options
to the app, including the
volume of instructions, how
many times they are
repeated, a bicycle mode, the
option to switch between Map
and List mode and the
brightness of the App.
14. Feasibility
This app does not require any particularly extensive
work: their are many GPS apps, the two biggest
problems will be the creation of a safe simple but
effect set of instructions and finding a way for the app
to warn about potential dangers: this can be achieved
through two methods, firstly through using DVLA or
equivalent data or by use of an algorithm to search the
road ahead for sharp corners. This is by far the most
complex area, both will require advanced programming
knowledge.
15. Business Case and Customer
Pledges
Customers were willing to pay for the app, but we still
decided that we needed constant revenue from the
app. We will have a Lite edition with less features and
adverts on the opening screen.
There will also be a full purchase of the app. This
version will have full features and no adverts on the
opening screen. But, it will be more expensive.
17. Wildcard
We believe that our app is unique among
other satnav apps, being audible based. We
also believe that being interchangeable to
allow cyclists to also use it is another selling
point that we can use.
