Berry Gordy founded Motown Records in 1958 in Detroit. Motown helped integrate popular music by promoting black artists like The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder. Motown developed its signature "Motown Sound" by blending genres like R&B, pop, and soul. Motown moved its headquarters to Los Angeles in the 1970s to expand its audience and sign new acts like The Jackson 5. Gordy grew distracted by Hollywood and Motown was eventually sold in 1988.
