The document discusses how the menu on the International Space Station had significantly fewer dehydrated meals than previous space missions, primarily due to differences in how the ISS and older spacecrafts/shuttles obtained power. Specifically, the ISS relies more on rechargeable solar panels while older vehicles used non-rechargeable rocket fuel, necessitating more shelf-stable pre-packaged meals. It also briefly mentions how coffee became popular in America and France in the early 1800s, replacing tea consumption after the Boston Tea Party, when Americans boycotted British goods like tea in protest. Finally, it describes the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is mended with lacquer mixed with powdered gold (X
6. Moveable Feast
The Hidenburg project by the zeppelin company was all about re-
establishing Germanys position in the world order and its worldwide
influence, receiving funds from the propaganda minister of the third
reich. To this effect it used multitude of strategies to subtly showcase
power and global influence, the menu included.
Being an hydrogen powered airship the dishes were simple, but yet
they were named so as to evoke a sense of awe and highlight
germanys position.
What was this subtle change?
7. Moveable Feast
Travel food and menu is dictated by the technology available to
preserve food and the ease of cooking. This obviously holds true
especially for the ISS where the stakes(and costs) are high. Thus it was
surprising when the menu on the ISS had significantly less dehydrated
meals than other types of meals when compared to previously manned
space missions, primarily a consequence of how the ISS is powered
compared to older rockets and space shuttles.
Identify what was the reason/ power source in both the cases.
8. Moveable Feast
Every major event in the history of america is said to have been
accompanied with coffee. Dubbed the Headquarters of the
Revolutionaries during the war of independence was actually a coffee
house named Green Dragon. By early 1800s Coffee had gained such
notoriety throughout america and france that Thomas Jefferson
claimed Coffee is the drink of the civilized world and shunned tea.
This wasn't always the case with americans consuming 1.2million
pounds of tea per year till the 1770s.
What led to this change?
9. Moveable Feast
In 15th century Japan , the king after receiving a shabbily mended piece
of pottery that he had earlier treasured was dissatisfied with the
method used to hide the defects. Thus ,he commissioned his artisans to
develop a new method.
This led to the birth of Kintsugi or Joining with X in english. The idea
behind this method was the philosophy to embrace your imperfections
and to treasure what you loved. It involved mending the areas of
breakage using a lacquer mixed or dusted with X.
Identify X using which a seemingly broken piece of art could be turned
into a valuable treasure.
