Subtraction involves taking away numbers or adding the inverse. Regrouping means borrowing from the tens place to help subtract in the ones place when the top number is less than the bottom number. When subtracting, always start with the ones place and regroup by borrowing from the tens place if needed before moving to the tens place. Look at it this way We have two sides that we are working with.. TENS ONES
What is first? What is next? I always start with my ones place when subtracting. I have to make sure that I can subtract the bottom number from the top number. If I can, I can go ahead and subtract. If I cannot I must REGROUP and borrow ten from the TENS place. Then I add that ten to my ONES place
