Look at it this way We have two sides that we are working with.. TENS   ONES
What is first? What is next? I always start with my ones place when subtracting. I have to make sure that I can subtract the bottom number from the top number. If I can, I can go ahead and subtract. If I cannot I must  REGROUP  and borrow ten from the  TENS   place. Then I add that ten to my  ONES  place
Always Remember ONES side first! 5 1 This side first. This side second. TENS 2 1 ONES 8 3

Lets REGROUP Remember that you have to work the ONES side first, but can we subtract 0-3? *No, we have to regroup. We must borrow ten from the tens, and add it to the ones. 4 10 7 2 TENS 5 2 ONES 0 3
