The 65 billion HK$
MTR
BIM EXPERIMENT 1
Press SOUND TO START
IS MANDATING BIM
ON LARGE, PUBLICLY FUNDED
INFRASTRUCTURE AND BUILDING
PROJECTS WORKING ?
This is The story of the
HK MTR BIM EXPERIMENT
(HK . . . UK . . . Who is next?)
2
MTR Corporation Limited is a listed Company on
The Hong Kong Exchange; the Hang Seng Index;
MTR is a major landlord and property developer
in Hong Kong and internationally.
MTR runs the Hong Kong metro rail network.
3
On the development of
the West Kowloon Terminus . . .
4
In line with international trends . . .
And to reduce risk to their stakeholders. . .
5
(that is, to get the project completed on time,
within budget)
and employed an approach called BIM.
6
MTR had taken advice
Digital models were used to define the project
As well as tens of thousands of drawings
and specifications
7
And the results were inconclusive
i.e. the project is still late and likely to be over budget
The use of BIM cost MTR
a lot of extra money .
8
the MTR prescribed the same approach
With some amendments to it
However, on MTRs next job,
the Shatin Central Link Line (SCL)
9
But by the contractors!
On this project, the BIM approach would be done
not by MTR
10
Contracts needing BIM were let
and signed by all.
11
Including highly specific and prescriptive BIM
requirements
the contractors had three months to review
the design documents,
Once all the contracts had been awarded,
12
and report to MTR on their findings
turn them into digital models.
13
would be identified and addressed in timely manner
This was to ensure most design mistakes
or omissions.
14
the UK Government is embarking on an
experiment of similar magnitude
15
while Hong Kong is innovating through
MTRs BIM initiatives
16
The use of Building Information Modelling will
be made mandatory on virtually all UK
government projects by 2016
Paul Morrell, the UK governments
chief construction adviser promises:
So somebody should ask the MTR :
How is this initiative going, two years
into the project.
UK and HK go back a long way . . .
17
How many of the contractors.
18
That had passed their 3 months cut-off.
in line with the specifications and their contractual
obligations to de-risk the project
had made their digital models and submitted
their honest reports to MTR .
19
waiting to turn into delays and claims to MTR?
guaranteeing that no surprises remained
in the design documents.
20
who will report, the no-doubt,
very promising AND reassuring results from
this experiment to his stakeholders
the GM enforcing this MTR project
contract is Mr Philco Wong
21
currently busy formulating their own BIM strategy
for delivering public buildings in a similar way
He may even share this success story with the
UK Government
22
23
On this project in Hong Kong, MTR have contractually
bound their contractors to identify all causes for extra costs
on this $65 billion dollar project,
within a period that ends three months after they had been
awarded the work.
The Positive results of the experiment of a BIM
deliverables deadline will provide solid evidence of
cost-certainty to MTR.
of the indeed magical powers of this thing,
called BIM!
This will be a great reassurance for
The UK Government too
