Muscular dystrophy is a hereditary, progressive, and non-curable disease that causes the degeneration and weakness of skeletal muscles due to defective genes. There are several types of muscular dystrophy including Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, which primarily affects males and can be life-threatening before age 20; limb-girdle dystrophy, which affects both genders and starts in the pelvis and legs; and facioscapulohumeral dystrophy, which relates to muscles in the face, shoulders, and arms. While there is no cure, treatment focuses on physical therapy, exercises, braces, and corrective surgery to relieve symptoms.
