PERIOD (1400-1600)
-Renaissance comes from the word renaitre which
means rebirth, revival or rediscovery
-secular music became more prominent
-Golden age of a cappella choral music
Characteristics of Renaissance Music
 Mostly polyphonic
 imitation among the voices is common
 use of word painting in texts and music
 melodic lines move in flowing manner
 Melodies are easier to perform because these move along a scale
with a few large leaps
-The word Baroque derives from the Portuguese word
barroco which means pearl of irregular shape.

Period (1685-1750)
Characteristic of Baroque Music
 Unity of mood
 Rhythm -rhythmic patterns heard at the beginning of piece
are repeated throughout
 Melody -successive repetition of a musical idea at higher or
lower pitch levels
-sound elaborate and ornamental and they are not
easy to sing or remember
 Terraced Dynamics
 Texture -polyphonic in texture(two or more melodic lines
compete for the listeners attention
-Music genres : operas, cantatas, suites, oratorios, concerto grosso,
