Students will analyze the effects of history on musical theater and how musical theater has had long term effects on history. This quest will search the history of musical theater as well as identify reasons that this amazing art form has continued to entertain people for centuries.
- 3. Introduction continued Course description: Students will learn the history of the musical theater in the United States as well as the development in Europe. Students will explore the musical theater in changing times and the influence that society and culture has on musical theater and vice versa. This class is also designed to give students a basic understanding of stage movement and dance as well as singing while you dance. We will also learn the basic great authors and composers of the early days of musical theater from Rodgers and Hammerstein to Cole Porter to Sondheim to Andrew Lloyd Webber and great dances by Astair and Fosse. 油 Come prepared to move and have fun while learning! It will be an asset to own dance shoes for this class. 油 Course Objectives: ~ understand and appreciate the evolution of the musical, including history and philosophy of the musical. 油 ~ analysis of the musical will be achieved by critique of musicals, understanding format and story line of a musical, and dissecting character development. 油 ~ students will end the class with a small performance of their choice including either dance and singing, singing and movement, acting and dancing or all musical theater disciplines.

- 12. Evaluation Introduction Task Process Evaluati on Conc lusion C redits Home Written work. Student turns in a polished look document that fits MLA style with proper citation. The paper has been well organized and thought out the report in orderly fashion. The paper will be double-spaced typed. The student uses appropriate language for the paper and correct grammar. The student will use at least three (3) references for a well-rounded paper. Use of comparison, contrast, and/or metaphors will add flavor to the report. Use of photos or documents and video or audio are of good quality and condition. Heres how to score well. Performance. The student has clearly read/studied the material by demonstrating well thought out scene work through the following: properly slating, vocal projection, good pacing and diction, posture appropriate to the character, appropriate language, singing aloud to fit the character, dance/movement is appropriate to the style of scene or time period. The performance will be full of energy and well planned and rehearsed and memorized.
