Barack Obama was the first African American president of the United States. He was born in 1961 in Hawaii to a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas. After his parents separated when he was young, Obama was raised in Hawaii by his mother and grandparents. He later graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, worked as a civil rights lawyer, and taught at the University of Chicago Law School. In 2008, Obama was elected president, becoming the first African American to hold the highest office in the United States.

Barack Obama Sr.. He was a black man from
Kenya, and his mother¡¯s name was Ann
Dunham. She was a white woman from

to a student from Indonesia, and the family
moved to Jakarta where Barack studied in an

Hawaii he was one of only three black students

In 1982 his real father died in a car accident.
His mother died of cancer in 1994.

became a civil rights lawyer. He also taught at

English, Indonesian and some Spanish.
In 2008 people elected Barack Obama as the new
president of the United States.
It was a truly historical event in the country.
In 2009, he won the Nobel Peace Prize.
