My PurdueZach Cardwell
PurdueIn 2006 I came to Purdue University as a wide eyed senior from high school without a penny in his pocket. I knew something about math and figured that I could get a tutoring job and thats where I found HORIZONS.
HORIZONSHORIZONS is an office dedicated to easing the transition from high school to university for low income, first generation students like myself. Through free tutoring for the student, the program sought to explain the material of science and math courses by specialized peers in a variety of subjects.
HORIZONSI tutored in all of the math courses that HORIZONS offered. One of the great pleasures in the experience, beyond really knowing the material, is that you do tend to meet people from all walks of life, and are often exposed to the misconceptions of university life that many students have. One of which is that Ross Ade Stadium, Mackey Arena, and Discovery Park are all there is to the University, while mostly offices and study spaces. Through much of the fan fare the true work of school is often forgotten and for people who dont take it seriously, it often falls on this program to fix.
HORIZONSHORIZONS represents Purdue for the simple reason of being where I received most of the Purdue Experience from. During the time at HORIZONS , I worked another full time job and often didnt do the often advertised things associated with Purdues athletic or social history. Meeting students my age, guiding them through the first years, and attempting to teach mathematics makes this quaint office something of a lens to the rest of the University.
HORIZONSThere are several stories associated with this little nook of Purdue. From the time when I learned that high school really doesnt teach much to student. Over all the office and the program has acted as the primary experience I had at Purdue due to another full time job, and when I look back ten years from now, Ill probably think of this office and my job there.
