Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that forms in plasma cells which are found in the bone marrow. It causes an overproduction of plasma cells which accumulate in the bone marrow and can cause bones to weaken or break. Symptoms may include bone pain, fatigue, weight loss, and frequent infections. Diagnosis involves tests of blood and bone marrow to identify the abnormal plasma cells. Treatment focuses on chemotherapy, radiation therapy, steroids, and stem cell transplants to kill the myeloma cells. Nursing care centers on medication administration, psychological support, monitoring for complications, and ensuring proper nutrition.
