Social media and web 2.0 tools can enhance project management by improving collaboration and communication. Traditional project management tools are control-oriented but do not facilitate interaction like blogs, wikis, microblogging and social networks. These new tools allow geographically dispersed teams to easily share updates, resources and ideas. Early adopters like Lockheed Martin are seeing benefits such increased productivity, better knowledge sharing and problem solving from implementing social media-enabled project management practices. While change can be difficult, project managers should embrace these new tools to adapt to trends in mobility, collaboration and Generation Y workstyles.
