Nanotechnology involves controlling and manipulating matter at the atomic and molecular scale, generally structures 100 nanometers or smaller. An Ultor scientist first created nanotechnology, which was then stolen and used to develop weapons. By 2075, Ultor scientist Axel Capek had successfully created nanotechnology, leading to the invention of the Nano Forge, which was later found by Red Faction rebels and used to develop powerful new weapons.

Nanotechnology, shortened to "nanotech", is the study of the controlling of matter on an atomic and
molecular scale. Generally nanotechnology deals with structures sized 100 nanometers or smaller in at
least one dimension, and involves developing materials or devices within that size.
Nanotechnology is very diverse, ranging from extensions of conventional device physics to completely
new approaches based upon molecular self-assembly, from developing new materials with dimensions on
the nano scale to investigating whether we can directly control matter on the atomic scale.
The Ultor Corporation first started experimenting with nanotechnology circa 2011, when their intention to
start mines on Mars became a developing project. The company used ordinary civilians as test subjects,
and many of them did not survive its effects, which triggered Ultor to bury the bodies to prevent its project
from becoming known to the public.[1]
In 2075, when the Ultor Corporation had already colonized Mars, nanotechnology was being successfully
created by Ultor scientist Axel Capek.[2] His inventions eventually led to the creation of the Nano Forge.

Five years later, the Commonwealth was using nanotechnology to create "supersoldiers" for use in their
own army. Victor Sopot had 2,000 of these soldiers created, but after fearing their immense power, he
ordered them to be hunted and eliminated. Only six of the supersoldiers avoided elimination: a squad of
soldiers consisting of Crate Molov, Alias, Shrike, Tangier, Repta and Quill.[4]
In 2125, during the Second Martian Revolution, Capek's Nano Forge was found by Alec Mason, a Red
Faction guerrilla. The Red Faction later used salvage to create the Nano Rifle, which could destroy any
form of matter.[3]
The Nano Forge was passed down to Darius Mason, Alec's grandson and a technician, who created
