EFFECTIVE NARRATIVE TECHNIQUES
FORESHADOWING Foreshadowing or guessing ahead is a literary device by which the author or the director hints what is to come further into the film.
PSYCHO Morion Crane overhears the character of Norman Bates get into an argument with his mother, who is emotionally abusive towards him. Nevertheless he defends her when marion sggests that their relationship maybe toxic. Norman explains that his mother is As harmless as one of htose stuffed Birds the line foreshadows the films twist when it reveals that norman killed and taxidermied his mother
BACK TO THE FUTURE In the opening credits, of back to the future, it features dozens of clocks in doc browns lab. One of the clocks features the character hanging from the hill valley clock, this foreshadows the events that unfold doc trying to harness a bolt of lightning to send Mary Mcfly and his Delorean back to the 1980s
RESERVOIR DOGS Following the story-line of a small group of criminals brought together to pull off a diamond heist, the criminals are unknown to each other and are referred to each other by colourful aliases e.g mr pink, Mr White ect. In the opening scene you can see that Mr orange is the police informant who set up the rest of the gang During the breakfast scene when joe leaves to pay the bill, everyone contribute a dollar for the waitresses tip- except for Mr Pink who refuses to pay based on principle. Without hesitation Mr orange rats out Mr Pink When Nice-guy Eddie rushes to the hideout after the heist gone wrong, theres an orange balloon following his car, which is an indication that Mr orange is after him.
SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION When Andy arrives at Shawshank, the warden gives all of the inmates a copy of the bible and tells them that Salvation lies from within. Eventually Andy escapes from prison by digging through the concrete for 20 years with a small rock hammer that he kept in hidden inside the book of Exodus in the bible with the an inscription from Andy: Dear Warden, you were right. Salvation lay within
SHAUN OF THE DEAD Simo pegg and nick Frost reveal the entire plot with the plans of a fun filled day of drinking: Bloody mary first things, bite at the kings head, couple at The Little Princess, Stagger back here, back at the bar for shots This foreshadows the plot as shaun and ed encounter the first zombie with the nametag mary, then the zombie bites the beck of his stepfather, who is the king of his family, then shaun saves the couple dave and dianne along with his princess Liz. The group then stubles back to the winchester where they shoot at the living dead,
CLIFFHANGER A Plot device in fiction which features a main character in a precarious or difficult dilemma, or confronted with a shocking revelation at the end Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Mans Chest So tell me.. Whats become of my Ship? Jack Sparrow sacrifices jumping into the jaws of the Kraken, taking the Black Pearl with him. As the rest of the crew re- visit Tia Dalma, wondering how they can defeat Davy Jones and rescue jack from Davy Joness locker. Barbossa enters the scene as a surprise twist, returning from the dead. This chliffhanger left the audience speechless yet excited of what else is to come.
THE DARK KNIGHT Hes the hero Gotham deserve, but not the one it needs right now. So well hunt him, because he can take it. Because hes not the hero. Hes a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A Dark Knight The ending of The Drak Knight became the biggest cliffhanger in the franchises history. Laying the groundwork for the epic inro to the jokers character and Batman is the unmasked villain set into hiding. The film ends with Batman on the run, protecting the identity of the white knight, Havey Dent, or, Two Face. With gordon smashing the batman signal, this heros reign of protector comes to a tragic end as he agrees to take the responsibility of those deaths, including Dents.
STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK The Empire Strikes back delivers the most memorable and amazing cliffhanger in cinematic history. The rebels have been driven from their base, Han Solo had ben captured and frozen in carbonite and taken by the bounty hunter Boba Fett. Luke Skywalker has lost his hand and everything he believed in and found out that Darth Vader is his Father and that ben Kenobi lied to him. Leia, Chweie and Lano didnt save han solo and Luke lost the battle with vader. However there wasnt a big battle against the Empire. In the end the audience find out that the bad guys won, leaving them speechless, having to wait three years for The Return of The Jedi. It must have been excruciating for the audience members to wait that long for their favourite franchise to return one again so they can finally be put at ease.
TZVETAN TODOROVS NARRATIVE THEORY: EQUILIBRIUM VS NEW EQUILIBRIUM This theory suggests that all narrative follows a three part structure where they begin with Equilibrium, where everything is balanced, then something comes along to disrupt that Equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution when a New Equilibrium is restored E.G: Zombieland, Shaun of the dead, independence day.
