President Thomas Jefferson appointed Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead an expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase territory and establish trade relations with Native American tribes. Lewis and Clark brought Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman, as an interpreter which proved invaluable as she helped them locate and communicate with her brother's tribe. After a difficult journey crossing the Rocky Mountains, they reached the Pacific Ocean near present-day Astoria, Oregon, becoming the first United States citizens to travel across the continent and back by land.
