The Bicycle Thief was considered the first neorealist film due to its documentary style of filming on location with non-professional actors and loose plot focused on the lives of ordinary people. It had a very low budget, was filmed in Italy directly after World War 2 and told the story of a man trying to provide for his family. The film went on to win the Grand Prize at Cannes and helped establish neorealism as an important film movement through its gritty portrayal of post-war struggles and escape from conventional studio filmmaking.
