WHAT IS A NETWORK? 2 or more computers linked together
to share resources and communicate

PURPOSE OF NETWORKS:
SHARING  To share information and resources e.g printers, internet access and
files.

CONNECTING PEOPLE- Through social media eg, Whatsapp, FB.

ENTERTAINMENT- You
can now stream and
access games/books
through accessing the
internet e.g Youtube,
Netflix.
ORGANISING
INFORMATION-
Recording information
centrally so everyone
has access to it and can
work together
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES:
Advantages: Disadvantages:
Makes communication easier- globally Viruses can easily transfer from one PC
to another
Cheaper- Share hardware such as
printers
Since PCs are connected, people can try
to access private and restricted
information
Information easily transferred Online crimes are easier to take place
TYPES OF NETWORKS:
PAN (personal area network)- For one person and has a
limited range e.g car and Bluetooth.
HAN (Home area network)- Connects devices within a
home e.g Phones, PCs, TVs.
WHAT IS NEEDED TO SET UP A
NETWORK
Nodes- Networking device e.g PCs, Phones..
Switch- Shares information between nodes.
Router- Used to connect to the internet in a HAN. Forwards
date from one network to another using the best route.
WHAT IS NEEDED TO SET UP A
NETWORK
Modem- Connects a network to the internet. (fibre/ADSL)
They can be wireless/wired. Pans are wireless, HANS
wired.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF PANS
Advantages: Disadvantages:
Space saver- no wire space as wireless Cant work more than 10 meters
Portable- no extra wires so easy to
move around
Slow data transfer eg bluetooth
Easy to use  no complicated set up Microwaves emitted by certain PANS
causes harm to the body
Security- Better because only
authorised people have access
Reliable for 10 meters
