Dr. Samra joined The Samra Group on July 1, 2013. Additionally, he has
joined the medical staff of Bayshore Community Hospital, Riverview Medical
Center, Jersey Shore Medical Center, Raritan Bay Medical Center (Old
Bridge and Perth Amboy Divisions), and Robert Wood Johnson University
Hospital. Dr. Samra is trained in the full spectrum of plastic surgery including:
craniofacial surgery, breast reconstruction, reconstructive oncology, body
contouring, burn surgery, wound care, cosmetic surgery, and has particular
expertise in hand and microsurgery after his fellowship training at Yale. The
fellowship consisted of a 1 year immersion in the orthopedic and plastic
reconstructive procedures of the wrist, hand and fingers as well as peripheral
nerve surgery and microsurgical reconstruction of complex defects using free
tissue transfers.
This past year Dr. Samra has participated in two surgical missions abroad.
The first was in March with Hand Help, Inc. where he traveled to San Pedro
Sula, Honduras for 1 week to perform hand surgeries on patients in need.
The procedures involved complex reconstructive hand surgeries on patients
(adults and children) with delayed presentations of nerve and tendon injuries
as well as congenital deformities. He used his experience in Honduras to
prepare him for his 2nd mission, a trip to Amman, Jordan from May 19-24 to
operate on Syrian refugees.
Dr. Salem Samra, MD
Dr. Samra is the son of Syrian immigrants to the United States and felt
compelled to do medical relief work to help the victims of the crisis in Syria.
Through the coordination of the Syrian American Medical Society, Dr. Samra
traveled to two hospitals in Amman that have been treating Syrian refugees
through the sponsorship of international relief organizations. He performed
15 procedures on 9 patients, the most by an American surgeon on Syrian
refugees in Jordan to date. These procedures included lower extremity
reconstruction, craniofacial surgery, flap reconstruction of pressure sores in
spinal cord injury patients, and complex reconstructive hand surgeries
including bone, tendon, and nerve grafting. This is in addition to the
distribution of approximately 200 lbs of medical supplies he carried over from
the United States to distribute to medical workers aiding Syrians in need.
Dr. Samra is very excited to be returning to his native community of central
New Jersey to implement his skills in plastic, reconstructive, and hand
surgery to serve the people of his home state. His offices are in Old Bridge
and Holmdel, NJ and consultations can be scheduled promptly.

Hand surgery procedures are usually performed to repair injured hands.
These include injuries to the tendons, nerves, blood vessels, joints, as well as
fractured bones, burns, cuts, and skin wounds. Modern techniques have
greatly improved the surgeons ability to restore function and appearance,
even in severe injuries. Among the techniques now used by hand surgeons
are:
Hand Surgery
Grafting the transfer of skin, bone, nerves, or other tissue from a healthy
part of the body to the injured part.
Flap surgery moving the skin, along with its underlying fat, blood vessels,
and muscle, from a healthy part of the body to the injured site.
Replantation or transplantation restoring amputated fingers or hands using
microsurgery, an extremely precise and delicate surgery performed under
magnification.

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
Hand Surgery
The carpal tunnel is a passageway through the wrist
carrying tendons and one of the hands major nerves. A
tingling sensation in the hand, often accompanied by
numbness, aching, and impaired hand function.
CONGENITAL DEFECTS
Congenital deformities of the hand that is, deformities a
child is born with can interfere with proper hand growth
and cause significant problems in the use of the hand.
One of the most common congenital defects is Syndactyly,
in which two or more fingers are fused together.

Hand Surgery
DUPUYTRENS CONTRACTURE
Dupuytrens contracture is a disorder of the skin and
underlying tissue on the palm side of the hand. Thick,
scar-like tissue forms under the skin of the palm and may
extend into the fingers, pulling them toward the palm and
restricting motion.
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
Rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammation of the joints, is a disabling disease that
can affect the appearance and the function of the hands and other parts of the
body. It often deforms finger joints and forces the fingers into a bent position
that hampers movement. Disabilities caused by rheumatoid arthritis can often
be managed without surgery
