Nitrogen in the air is converted to nitrates which become part of living animals and plants. When these organisms die, their waste or decaying bodies return nitrogen to the environment as nitrates. This completes the nitrogen cycle as nitrates can then be reabsorbed by plants and incorporated into new living organisms.
