Local discovery has evolved from paper directories and friend recommendations to modern mobile search and review sites. However, mobile local search is still difficult because queries are hard to write, browsing takes too much effort, and reviews are lengthy. By 2020, local discovery will improve through predictive search based on personal preferences and friend activity, so that recommendations are personalized without typing. Users will also receive proactive alerts about nearby places and deals based on their location through technology like beacons and wearables.
