SYNOPSIS OF CHAPTER The snow has come to an end.The school has started again in the month of April America declares war on Germany.One morning,Richards English teacher, Mrs Hansen tells the class that a famous poet, Joyce Kilmer has just volunteered for army service in the on going world war.She reads a poem entitled Tree written by Joyce Kilmer to the class.Some students in the class think poems are for sissies, but Richard is fascinated by the beauty of the simple poem.Mrs Hansen explains that poets are not sissies and gives some examples of poets who join the army. Richard borrows Mrs. Hansen poetry book by Joyce Kilmer and secretly jotted down the New Yorks Time editors office address.On the way back home.Richard meets Hannah Schermers, the pretty girl of German crying in the hallway because someone had scrawled the words dirty hun on her book cover.Richard confronts his classmates who then reveal their hatred toward Germans and consider Hannah as one of their enemy. At home,Richard reads the book he borrows from Mrs Hanse. Then he decides to write to Mr Kilmer, he introduces himself and tells hin he likes his simple poems and shares abaout his secret.He sents the letter to the New York Times.
MESSAGE We must have the courage to speak out and act according to our priciples and beliefs. Truth integrity and homour are important values to have as they dare that other good qualities are also present. We must try understand other people and be compassionsme. Fillial Love Gus love Richard his brother, he advises him to fitting in with community so he will not be isolated by them Patriotic Spirit Mr Kilmer joined the war even he is a famous poet because he hope that he can end the war so next generation will no involved with his unnecessary war.
OPINION In my opinion,we should be brave ,creative and respect for each others,like Richard decided to write to Mr Kilmer,he introduce himself and told him that he liked his simple poems and shared about his secret poetry writing.At the end,he send the letter to the New York Times.
