Nurse practitioners are valuable healthcare providers that receive extensive education and clinical training. However, Texas has overly restrictive regulations that require nurse practitioners to work under the supervision of physicians and meet with them monthly. This limits nurse practitioners' ability to practice to the full extent of their education and certification. Many other states have less restrictive regulations and are recruiting nurse practitioners from Texas to help address primary care shortages. The author calls on legislators to modernize nurse practitioner regulations in Texas so that patients have more healthcare choices and access.
