Major Chewang Rinchen, a veteran of the 1947-48 and 1965 wars, led Nubra Guards in capturing over 20 miles of territory from three companies of Karakoram Scouts by advancing more than twenty miles. This largely ignored Buddhist Ladakhi hero from the 1971 war captured the most significant 20 miles long tract of later crucial territory, as praised in a 1979 Pakistani army study.
