Octalysis Framework
Gamification in SaaS
What is the Octalysis Framework?
¡ñ Human-centered gamification framework created by Yu-Kai Chou.
¡ñ Used to drive engagement and product adoption.
¡ñ Has 8 core drives for human motivation:
¡ð Epic meaning and calling
¡ð Accomplishment
¡ð Empowerment and Creativity
¡ð Ownership
¡ð Social Influence
¡ð Scarcity and Impatience
¡ð Unpredictability and Curiosity
¡ð Loss and Avoidance
White hat Cores
White hat core drives the user to feel powerful, fulfilled, and satisfied.
It involves motivations that engage the user on expressing creativity and
achievement through mastering of skills, resulting in a higher sense of
accomplishments. (I¡¯ll save the world, after my cup of coffee!)
Core Drive 1: Epic Meaning and Calling
This Core Drive is in play when a person believes he or she is doing something
greater than oneself or was ¡°chosen¡± to take action.
Core Drive 2: Development/Accomplishment
Development and accomplishment is our internal drive for making progress,
developing skills, achieving mastery, and eventually overcoming challenges.
Core Drive 3: Empowerment and Creativity
This drive is expressed when users are engaged in a creative process where they
repeatedly figure new things out and try different combinations.
Black hat Cores
Black Hat core drives make us feel obsessed, anxious and addicted.
Also known as FOMO!
Core Drive 6: Scarcity and Impatience
Completing tasks before time runs out.
Core Drive 7: Curiosity
Unpredictability is the core drive of constantly being engaged because you don't
know what is going to happen next. This is the primary core drive behind
gambling addictions.
Core Drive 8: Loss and Avoidance
Loss and avoidance is the core drive that motivates us to avoid something
negative from happening. AKA FOMO!
But .. what about the other
two?
Core Drive 4: Ownership
This drive refers to users feeling like they own or control something. When a
person feels ownership over something, they innately want to increase and
improve what they own.
Core Drive 5: Social Influence
This drive incorporates all the social elements that motivate people, including:
mentorship, social acceptance, companionship, and even competition and envy.
