The Octalysis Framework identifies 8 core human motivations for driving engagement: Epic Meaning and Calling, Accomplishment, Empowerment and Creativity, Ownership, Social Influence, Scarcity and Impatience, Unpredictability and Curiosity, and Loss and Avoidance. It categorizes these into "white hat" cores that satisfy users through achievement and creativity, and "black hat" cores that make users feel obsessed through fear of missing out. The framework was created by Yu-Kai Chou to help design gamification strategies for user engagement and product adoption.
