Oculus Go was released in May 2018 as a standalone VR headset without the need for a mobile phone or other external device. It has a higher resolution display and is lighter weight compared to earlier Gear VR headsets which require coupling with specific Samsung phones. Both Gear VR and Oculus Go offer 3 degrees of freedom movement but Oculus Go has optional 6DOF controllers while Gear VR only supports 3DOF motion.
