Editor's Notes

  • #15: A third example is a project our fellows did in Boston in 2011 to take data about school selection and turn it into something digestible. This is what parents in Boston used to get. Its 25 pages, all of them as dense as this one.
  • #16: Again, we turned that data into easily searchable, filtered results based on criteria you enter
  • #17: You see a map of eligible schools
  • #18: And information about those schools so you can make a more informed decision about the school your child should go to. We were able to convince the city to give us information about how many applicants each school got so you could better understand your odds of getting your student in. And this brings me to a point I want to make about all of these toolseverything weve built is all built on data that was already public and that the city was happy for us to work with. When it comes time to push for things that arent already available there can be tension, particularly, as in this case, when government officials thought it was too sensitive to release. And thats a reflection on our approach. We think its important to work with government to make tools like these happen but that makes it MUCH harder for us to bring the accountability hammer down when they dont want to release data.
