2. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn chronicles the river journey of
two runaways---Huck, who is running from his abusive father,
and Jim, a runaway slave. The novel examines the theme of
nature vs. civilization. Huck Finn is a natural,
down-to-earth character who feels separated
from society. Widow Douglas and her sister Miss
Watson are trying to sivilize him and he
blames himself for being so ignorant and
so kind of low-down and ornery. However
, Twain showed that Hucks naturalness is
redeeming.

4. Early in the novel, the river is established as a major symbol of the
natural world. The river provides good things for Huck and Jim. In
Hucks time of need , the river provides his means of escape from his
father. I went along up the bank with one eye out for pap and
tother one out for what the rise might fetch along and all at once,
here comes a cance just a beauty, too. Later the river provides a raft
and supplies for Huck and Jim to begin their journey.

5. One way Twain shows the superiority of nature over
civilizationis through Huck and Jims life together on the raft.
Hucks conscience, which symbolizes society, told him that
people would call me a low-down Ablitioruist for not
turning Jim in to the authorities .Hucks decision to help Jim
shows his natural concern and respect for human dignity
rather than acquired prejudice. Huck and Jim live peacefully
and cooperatively on the raft Jim, this is nice. I wouldnt
want to be nowhere else but here.Pass me along another
hunk of fish

7. When the action of the novel takes place on land
(civilization) the events are darker. For example,
Huck stays a while with the Grangerfords, a
family involved in a long family feud with the
Shepherdsons. The feud escalates and ends in
slaughter. On the river, life as cooperative
and compassionate. Huck says It would a
been a miserable business to have any
unfriendliness on the raft, For what you
want, above all things, on a raft, is for
everybody to be satisfied, and feel right
and kind toward the others
9. The novels conclusion shows that along his river journey with Jim,
Hucks natural will has, in part, defeated civilizations pull on him.
The novel ended with Huck saying that hes going to Light out for
the [Western] Territory ahead of the rest because another woman
wants to adopt and sivilize him, and he cant stand it

10. Twain used the river journey to show the struggle of society and
civilization versus instinctual goodness and the natural world Huck
struggles to the end with his conscience and with the pulls of
civilization, but we see that he is most comiortable when he is on the
real and the metaphorical river.
