This document provides personal examples of operant conditioning principles including: primary and secondary reinforcers using food/water and money to buy snacks; a negative reinforcer of restricting internet access until chores are done; a positive reinforcer of a teacher drawing a smiley face for high test grades; and punishments of writing repeated sentences for lying and removing phone privileges for missing curfew.
2. Primary Reinforcer Example
An example is my day-to-day, innate need to
have food and water. Nutritional food and
enough water satisfies my daily biological
needs.
3. Secondary Reinforcer Example
I do chores around the house for money. I
use the money to buy certain snacks and
Taco Bell, which is essential to survive.
4. Negative Reinforcer Example
An example is when my room is messy, and
my parents restrict me from using the Internet
until it is clean. Restricting me from the
Internet is the negative reinforcer.
5. Positive Reinforcer
My pre-calculus teacher encourages studying
and doing well on tests by drawing a smiley
face on tests that receive an A or higher.
6. Punishment by Application
When I was little, I lied to my parents about a
grade I made, and made me write several,
repeated sentences on what I did.
7. Punishment by Removal
My parents took away my phone, because I
came home past my curfew one night.
