The Georgia Department of Defense chain of command has the Governor as the Commander-in-Chief who oversees the Adjutant General, currently Major General Jim Butterworth. Below the Adjutant General are the Deputy Adjutant General, commanders of the Georgia Army and Air National Guard, directors of various departments, and the Commanding General of the Georgia State Defense Force, all working to oversee the approximately 15,000 National Guard members, State Defense Force members, and state employees that make up the Georgia Department of Defense organization.
