Origami Definition

   Origami, (pronounced) (or-i-GA-me)
is the Japanese art of paper folding.
Ori is the Japanese word for
folding and kami is the Japanese
    word for paper.
The Origins of Origami . .
   Even though Origami
    is known as a
    Japanese Art, it
    actually began in
    China. The Chinese
    invented paper
    around 100 A.D., and
    when the invention
    spread to Japan
    around 600 A.D., so
    did the art of paper
    folding.
The History of Origami
In ancient times, Origami was only used by the rich and for
special events such as weddings. Figures shaped like animals
and costumed people had special meanings.
The construction was done using whatever piece of paper they
had. They would wrap gifts using the origami form. The art
was passed down through elders and learned by practicing.
The first book ever written on origami was in 1797, and it was
called The Secret of One Thousand Cranes Origami.

Akira Yoshizawa
          Considered to be the
           Grandmaster, Akira Yoshizawa
named the art origami in the
           1950's. He created more than
           50,000 models.
He wrote 18 books about the art
           of origami.
In 1983, he was named into the
Order of the Rising Sun, one of
the highest honors that can be
given to a Japanese citizen by
           Japanese emperor Hirohito.
