Peak Flow Attenuation of On Site Detention (OSD)
using Storm Water Management Model (SWMM)
Introduction
 Stormwater runoff is the water from rain falls on the land and drain
into watershed .
 Impervious surfaces will cause the stormwater runoff to flow
quickly over the ground into the drain or stream.
 The excess stormwater flow into the stream without control will
cause flooding.
 Stormwater management is an approach for controlling the volume
of stormwater runoff flow into the stream.
Introduction
 The function of On Site Detention is as a water quantity device.
 By providing the temporary storage and release the water
gradually it will limit the peak outflow rate.
 Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is the dynamic
rainfall-runoff simulation model used to simulate continuous the
runoff quantity and quality from primarily urban area.

Problem statement
 Urbanization increase the volume of stormwater runoff flow
into the stream.
 Rapid disposal approach requires continuous upgrading of the
drainage.
 Additional cost are required to design and construct the drain to
accommodate the increase volume of runoff.
Objectives
 To develop the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) for
On site detention (OSD).
 To study the flow attenuation of On Site Detention (OSD).
 To evaluate the OSD for terrace house, semi D and bungalow.

 10 years Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) of On Site
Detention (OSD) design .
 Research location : Alor Setar
 Model used : Storm Water Management Model

source which is sustainable approach to mitigate flooding.
 Provide the potential and benefit of SWMM as a tool for
planning and design OSD.
 The study were generate the size of OSD for different
residential development.

  • 2. Introduction Stormwater runoff is the water from rain falls on the land and drain into watershed . Impervious surfaces will cause the stormwater runoff to flow quickly over the ground into the drain or stream. The excess stormwater flow into the stream without control will cause flooding. Stormwater management is an approach for controlling the volume of stormwater runoff flow into the stream.
  • 3. Introduction The function of On Site Detention is as a water quantity device. By providing the temporary storage and release the water gradually it will limit the peak outflow rate. Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is the dynamic rainfall-runoff simulation model used to simulate continuous the runoff quantity and quality from primarily urban area.

  • 6. Problem statement Urbanization increase the volume of stormwater runoff flow into the stream. Rapid disposal approach requires continuous upgrading of the drainage. Additional cost are required to design and construct the drain to accommodate the increase volume of runoff.
  • 7. Objectives To develop the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) for On site detention (OSD). To study the flow attenuation of On Site Detention (OSD). To evaluate the OSD for terrace house, semi D and bungalow.

  • 13. Benefits project to Civil Engineering Application of stormwater management based on control at source which is sustainable approach to mitigate flooding. Provide the potential and benefit of SWMM as a tool for planning and design OSD. The study were generate the size of OSD for different residential development.
