OutReach is coming out
Its an exciting new year and I am pleased to announce the launch of a new USC
student organization called OutReach. It is USCs only student organization
dedicated to reach out to and recruit LGBT and Ally high school students. In
collaboration with USCs LGBT Resource Center, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, &
Transgender Assembly (GLBTA), and the Rainbow Floor, OutReach will mentor high
school students in Gay/Straight Alliances (GSAs) and recruit future students for USC.
OutReach will also present one of the only college recruitment guides in the nation
for LGBT high school students. OutReach is groundbreaking in its approach, and I
am excited to get this year underway.
Sincerely,
Jarod Wunneburger

utReach is coming out and ready to serve.
Formally known as OutREACH, the organization
concentrated on a wide range of topics under the
slogan Out for Rights, Education, Action,
Community, and Health. This year our mission is
to educate and to recruit high school LGBT and
Ally students. OutReach will focus on GSAs within
high schools to provide support to LGBT and Ally
high school students.
OutReach will be a heart centered organization,
that will serve LGBT youth and show them LGBT
life at USC as well as become a part of their
support network to strengthen their GSA program.
What We Believe
2
Who We Are
At the end of the 2006/2007 school year 3,577
GSAs were registered with the Gay, Lesbian and
Straight Education Network (GLSEN), with GSAs
in every state, Washington D.C., and Puerto
Rico. This represents 13% of all high schools in the
United States.
OutReach strives to offer support and resources for high school LGBT and Ally
students. We will focus on college advancement and consultation on
organization, programming, and leadership development. Our goal is to
foster meaningful alliances with GSA students and recruit potential student
applicants for USC.
Our Goal
Our Philosophy
What We Value
We are a heart centered organization designed to bene鍖t to
the most number of people that we possibly can. We will be
grounded with our values and ideals and work and with the
theory that if we affect one individual or GSA we can affect the
larger community as well.
Everyone Has potential
We strongly believe that every student can succeed given
the right support.
Heart Centered
Every decision will be made with one thought: Whos
needs are we serving?
Support
For the students, their GSA, ourselves, and each other.
Education
Education is the key to every students future.
Empowerment
Given these students the tools to succeed long after they
have left our program and their high schools.
Recruitment
Every student should have a good education, and USC
can provide that education, especially to LGBT & Ally
students

The purpose of the GLBTA is to provide fun and effective LGBT related programming for
the USC community. The GLBTA promotes involvement, provides support, and serves as
a resource not only to LGBT and allied students, faculty, and staff but also the larger
USC community. The organization sponsors large scale events like National Coming
Out Week and Pridefest as well as smaller programs like U-Rap and monthly 鍖lm
soirees.
The LGBT Resource Center works in collaboration
with campus of鍖ces, organization and community
networks to create a safe, welcoming and inclusive
campus environment for all students, faculty and
staff. Services include:
LGBT related information, referrals, and
con鍖dential crisis intervention
Networking with neighboring LGBT-friendly
resources
Student programming opportunities and leadership
development
Lavender Commencement Celebration
Spring Leadership Retreat: Generation Queer
In 2006 the
Advocate College
Guide gave USC
a perfect Gay
Point Average,
the only school
on the west coast
and one of only
two in the nation
to receive such an
honor.
The University of Southern California ranks among
LGBT-Friendly Colleges and Universities.
The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students lists
USC among the top 20 LGBT-Friendly Colleges &
Universities that create a positive environment for LGBT
students.
USCs recognition as one of the best of the best is a
great honor for our campus, said Michael L. Jackson,
Vice President for the Division of Student Affairs. It is a
tribute to the innovate work of the LGBT Resource
Center and the commitment of the university to create
as positive an environment as possible for all students.

What We Have To Offer
OutReachs program will be multifaceted to provide a complete mentoring experience for the GSAs. Our
program includes:
LGBT College Life @ USC
With our recruitment guide developed by the LGBT Resource Center we will offer students a sneak
peek into college life at USC and the steps it takes to get to USC.
College Admissions
Everyone in OutReach is currently in college, so we all have knowledge about what it takes to get
in! While college admissions isnt our main focus, we are available for questions.
Leadership Development
A core component of our program is training students to become better leaders and more informed
citizens on LGBT issues.
GSA Programming Assistance & Support
Between OutReach and the other LGBT organizations at USC we have a wide range of
programming experience and will be available to assist GSAs in building their own programs.
OutReach will work directly with the USC GLBTA and the LGBT Resource Center to acquire
resources to reach out to high school GSAs.
Initial contact will be by phone to discover which high schools have a functioning GSA.
We will mail the GSA a packet with OutReach information, the LGBT Resource Centers
information, USCs LGBT recruitment guide, and more!
A USC student panel will present at GSA meetings. The recruitment guide will be a large
part of that presentation as well as other OutReach services
OutReach will also facilitate leadership trainings and will answer any questions about
organizing or applying to college. We will also encourage students to apply to USC and visit
during the Rainbow Floors Overnight Experience.
How We Will Work
What We Have To Offer

Branding & Identity
How We Will Work
OutReachs long-term success is contingent on having a clearly recognizable
identity and program, one that is familiar to GSAs everywhere. To assist in this
effort, these four logo variations have been designed to clearly distinguish
OutReach. When consistently applied on our materials, the brand conveys the
unique qualities of OutReach and create a coherent OutReach image.
