The document discusses different types of computer output devices. It describes hardcopy output as printed output and softcopy output as visual or audio output displayed on screens. It then explains various output hardware components like display monitors, printers, speakers, data projectors, and interactive whiteboards. It provides details on categories and features of different monitor types as well as how impact and non-impact printers form images.
2. Output is data that has been processed into a useful
form
Hardcopy : Hardcopy refers to printed output
Softcopy : Softcopy refers to data that is shown on a
display screen or is in audio or voice form.

3. An output device is any type of hardware
component that conveys information to one
or more people

4. Most commonly used output device
Categories of Monitors
Monochrome monitors
Grayscale monitors
Color monitors

5. CRT monitor (Page # 95)
A CRT, for cathode-ray tube, is a vacuum
tube used as a display screen in a computer or
video display terminal. Images are represented
on the screen by individual dots or picture
elements called pixels. A pixel is the smallest
unit on the screen can be turned on and off or
made different shades.

6. Flat-panel display - made up of two plates of glass
separated by a layer of a substance in which light is
manipulated
Categories of LCD
Active-matrix - each pixel on the screen is
controlled by its own transistor
TFT- Thin film transistor
Passive-matrix - a transistor controls a whole row or
column of pixels

7. Paper-white displays
Creates higher contrast , Used by desktop publishing
specialists, newspaper or magazine compositor and
other persons who creates high quality printed
documents
Electroluminescent Displays(ELDs)
Uses phosphorescent film held between two sheets
of glass. A grid of wires sends current through the film
to create an image
Plasma Display
These are display devices that use gas plasma technology

8. Size
The Larger the size the bigger the image
Measured diagonally
Resolution
Sharpness and clarity of image
Number of pixels on the screen
640X480 means 640 pixels horizontally and 480
pixels vertically
Video graphics array

9. Refresh Rate
Number of times per second that the electron
gun scans pixels on screen
Measured in Hertz
Dot Pitch
The distance between the liked colored phosphor
dots of adjacent pixels
Measured as a fraction of a millimeter(mm)

10. A printer produces text and graphics on a
physical medium
Printed information is called a hard copy, or
printout
Landscape or portrait orientation
Impact printers
Non impact printers

11. Impact printers form characters and graphics
on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism
against an inked ribbon that physically
contacts the paper
Dot matrix printer
Line Printer
Band Printers

12. A nonimpact printer forms characters and
graphics on a piece of paper without actually
striking the paper
Laser Printer
Ink-Jet Printer
Thermal Printer

15. It is used to print large format images
Used for architectural, engineering drawings
and construction maps

16. An audio output device produces
music, speech, or other sounds
Most computer users attach speakers to their
computers to:
Generate higher-quality sounds for playing games
Interact with multimedia presentations
Listen to music
View movies
Headphones are speakers that cover your head
or are placed outside of the ear
Earbuds (also called earphones) rest inside the
ear canal

17. A data projector is a
device that takes the
text and images
displaying on a
computer screen and
projects them on a
larger screen

whiteboard is a touch-
sensitive device,
resembling a dry-erase
board, that displays
the image on a
