The ENHANCE project aimed to enhance the application of JISC outputs at UWIC. It sought to improve staff skills for technology enhanced learning and encourage use of new technologies. UWIC's Cardiff School of Management requires undergraduate students to complete work placements and maintain a reflective log of their experiences. Initially, an e-portfolio tool called Expo was used, but it had limitations. The ePPSME model was designed as a solution. It uses PebblePad webfolios to provide context-sensitive learning content, blogs, and an all-in-one learning platform to better support students during work placements. RAT & Blended Learning - Blended Learning is NOT about the combination of media or technologies. The mixture of digital and analogue media won't necessarily improve learning. Neither will the combination of Wi-Fi, phones and apps substantially shift our teaching.
We need to shift our gaze from "shiny gadgets" and focus on how we can thoughtfully integrate our learning and teaching activities, whether they be in the classroom or online or both.
The RAT continuum is a useful way to start thinking about the blend. RAT is a framework to describe how ed tech is used. We either replace, amplify or transform our teaching and learning with tech. Often our tech use is focused our replacement. E-books instead of a textbook. An online quiz instead of a test. A video instead of a lecture. The delivery vehicle is different, but the form remains the same. Replacement tech might have novelty value, but it wont change practices in a typical normal room.
To blend in a way that takes advantage of the affordances of tech, then we should be re-thinking how we want to use technology in the blended learning classroom. RAT is a good place to begin re-conceptualizing our un-examined assumptions about technology can be useful.

London Metropolitan University has approximately 34,000 students from 150 countries supported by around 3,000 staff members. In 2006-2007, the university migrated from its previous learning management system, WebCT, to Blackboard Vista, piloting it in some departments. With only 1-2 learning technologists, training consisted of twice daily basic Blackboard sessions and bespoke departmental training. Now, the university aims for 100% Blackboard usage but still only has 2 learning technologists providing open and customized training, online support, and half-hour one-on-one Blackboard surgeries. The recent technology of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has undeniable advantages, especially with regard to improving the efficiency of all stakeholders in the education process.
At the same time, almost all responsible international organisations and experts in the field of education and educational technology point out a multitude of general ethical problems that need to be addressed. Many of these problems have already arisen in previous models of artificial intelligence or even in systems based on learning data, and several are appearing for the first time.
In this short contribution, we will briefly review some dimensions of ethical problems, both (a) the general ones related to trust, transparency, privacy, personal data security, accountability, environmental responsibility, bias, power imbalance, etc., and (b) the more directly related to teaching, learning, and education, such as students' critical thinking, the social role of education, the development of teachers' professional competences, etc.
In addition, the categorizations of possible service allocation to humans and AI tools, the human-centered approach to designing AI tools and learning data, as well as the more general design of ethics-aware applications and activities will be briefly presented.
