MAJOR GENERAL SHAFIQ AHMAD
AWAN ,
SJ, IS (OPERATIONS)
By Major Ghias Uddin Babar ,
40 Punjab Regiment
An icon, a role model junior leader and
senior officer, a man of highest integrity
n character. see his greatness, as he
6
dedicates outstanding war performance of
19 FF (Piffer Tigers) to the brave, gallant
n courageous actions of his team of
officers, JCOs, soldiers and blessings of
Almighty Allah n Karama and a miracle.
Indeed a legendary personality.in present
day social media exchanges, normally
topic is mentioned here n there in general
form in bits n pieces to keep it going.
Based on my humble understanding n
moment to moment study of events of
Shakargarh Battles of Indo Pak 1971,
may I say that it was superb leadership
of highest order demonstrated through
self example n leading from the front that
in considered opinion may one say "19 FF
(PIFFER TIGERS) war performance n
victories remain unmatched n
unprecedented in the history of Pakistan
Army. Gen Shafiq is a born soldier and a
specially blessed personality. I never saw
or met anyone like him in my life n I very
much mean it. May I add that in those
stressful days of 1971 n in an
7
environment studded with complex crisis
situation all around, his Bn was fighting
with 25% Bengalis, 25% Pathans n 50%
Punjabis. It was noble n dynamic
leadership of their the then CO LT COL
SHAFIQ AHMED AWAN that esprit de
corp, motivation n excellent
management, amalgamation of Bengalis,
Pathans n Punjabis with complete
homogeneity with in the unit remained
exemplary and unparalleled (inspite of
rebellious situation prevailing in other
units having Bengalis).
Thanking you n regards- Major Ghias
Uddin Babar (retired)
