This document discusses Hemingway's concept of the code hero as depicted in his novel The Old Man and the Sea. It identifies two types of Hemingway heroes: the protagonist and the code hero. The protagonist is a young, inexperienced man who is honest, sensitive, and physically wounded. The code hero is an older man who has endured hardship and offers principles of honor, courage, and endurance as a tutor or mentor to younger men. In The Old Man and the Sea, the old fisherman Santiago is presented as Hemingway's most famous code hero, teaching the importance of perseverance and finding pride in failure through his struggles.
