Rasa theory describes the nine primary emotional responses or "rasas" that artwork and performances can evoke. It was described by Bharata Muni in the Natya Shastra. The rasas are built upon specific emotional states or "bhavas" and each rasa is represented by a color. The nine rasas are: shringara (love), hasya (laughter), karuna (sorrow), raudra (anger), veera (heroism), bhayanaka (fear), bibhatsa (disgust), adbhuta (wonder), and shanta (peace). Each rasa is exemplified through characters from Hindu epics like the Ramayana.
