Pararlama
A few words about the author…
Demosthenes Voutyras
1872-1958
Τhe author of
our short story
“Pararlama”
was born in
Constantinople
in 1872
Later he settled with his family
in Piraeus, where he lived a
large part of his life.
In his stories, he describes the
psychology of deprived or failed people
who live fatally ungrateful lives and do
not belong to an organized society
The short story
In “Pararlama” our
main hero, Farmas,
is an eccentric
person, representing
all the marginalized
people
Farmas works
in a factory,
where no one
cares and
everyone walks
around him
Trying to arouse
interest and being
influenced by a
conversation he
overhears in a tavern
full of hatred for
people, he comes up
with a plan to scare
his colleagues
So he thinks of
an unknown,
meaningless word,
“Pararlama”
which he writes
on the walls of his
workplace, every
night, for three
consecutive nights,
when everyone
is asleep
With this action, Farmas wants to
leave his mark and feel that he is
capable of provoking reactions
Indeed, his
Incomprehensible
word frightens
people and he
enjoys watching
his colleagues
talking about a
ghost that struck
them at night
His success is based on the fear
he causes to others and it is only
personal satisfaction
At the end of the story, our
hero cannot reverse either the
flow of things or the conditions
of his work and life
He remains on the
sidelines of his life
as an outcast
THE END
