2. Paul Pope, is an acknowledged
original in the world of comic
books. And this is not so easy to
achieve as some might think.
Once an artist has struggled to
distil a distinctive style "within
the alembic of his art," it is
natural to employ those same
motifs and visual signatures in
succeeding works.
3. Paul Pope has other ideas. He has
become one of the best-loved comic
book artists of the last two
decades, creating a unique visual
style that has been described as
Jack Kirby meets Manga. He fuses
Eastern and Western comic book
traditions to create a truly unique
and distinctive aesthetic, which
has seen him build a fan base of
millions across the world
4. Paul Pope would be the first to
acknowledge, the comic book genre
is a hybrid form - relying as much
upon visual stimulation to drive
the plot as it does upon words -
and this appears to have confused
more conservative critics, who
regard the form as being one
primarily to provoke interest in
the young for more traditionally
orientated works.
5. Paul Pope was lucky enough to
have utilized his talents with
some of the industry greats
throughout the 90s, including
drawing for the famous comic
'Heavy Liquid.' His style fuses his
love of manga comics along with
the more traditional Western
aesthetic style - a unique style for
which he has become well known.
